Call of Duty is a first-person shooter game that first hits the gaming community back in 2003.
All games in the Call of Duty franchise were published by Activision but developed by different gaming studios.
Initially, COD games were sets in the events of World War II; however, over time, the games featured futuristic worlds, outer space, and Cold War. Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer were the first sets of game development companies that developed the earlier version of COD games.
In this article, we would consider each Call of Duty game in its order of release throughout the 18-year history of the game.

1. Call of Duty
Release Date: October 29, 2003
The first installment in the Call of Duty franchise is Call of Duty, developed by Infinity Ward and released in 2003.
It is a first-person single-player shooter game sets within events of World War II and has players controlling a soldier within a unit.
The game showcase three different perspectives of its campaign where players can play as an American soldier, British soldier, and a Soviet soldier, all leading to the goal of defeating the Axis powers.
There are tons of missions in the game to keep players busy and which must be completed in order to progress in the game.
Also to note, the 2003 COD holds unique features that can’t be found in any of the other COD games.
One is the fact players can’t automatically regenerate health; rather, players will have to search for a first-aid kit on the map to heal.
Players can save their progress at any point in the game, unlike the other COD games that require players to get to a checkpoint before saving.
2. Call of Duty 2
Release Date: October 25, 2005
As with its predecessor, the second installment of the COD series follows the same World War II settings and was released in 2005.
However, its campaign mode offers four perspectives of play: Red Army, United States Army, and two protagonists in the British Army.
The regenerating health feature comes into play in COD 2 and the traditional grenade icons that flash on the screen when a player is close to an explosive.
COD 2 also features a multiplayer mode of play and features several types of gameplay such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, Capture the Flag, and Headquarters.
Overall, COD 2 features four individual campaign modes that diversify into three distinct stories and 27 missions.
3. Call of Duty 3
Release Date: November 7, 2006
Developed by Treyarch, COD 3 was released in 2006. Events of COD 3 take place in the year 1944 and is sets on the Western Front of World War II.
Players will choose to play as an American, British, Polish, or Canadian soldier in a single-player campaign that features 14 missions.
These missions are specific to the four major Allied campaigns in the Battle of Normandy. COD 3 also features multiplayer modes and allows players to compete in several online matches.
Its gameplay is open-ended, meaning that players can complete in-game objectives in whatever timing and path they see fits.
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Release Date: November 5, 2007
The fourth installment in the COD series, COD 4: Modern Warfare, was developed by Infinity Ward and, unlike its predecessors, breaks away from the World War setting; rather, it is set in a modern-day world.
Its story plot centers around the execution of the president of a nameless country and a nationalist movement that ignites a Civil war in Russia.
The multiplayer mode of COD 4 holds more gameplay content compare to its predecessor as it features a variety of game modes.
COD 4 was a success, and that reflected in its financial aspects as it was the highest-selling game in its year of release, 2007.
5. Call of Duty: World at War
Release Date: November 11, 2008
The fifth main installment of the COD series returns to the World War II setting.
However, COD: World at War set the pace in being the first installment of the Black Ops series and the first game of the COD series to features the survival zombies mode which later featured in following sequels.
The narratives of COD: World at War is based on a number of historical battles in World War II and told from the viewpoint of Marine Raider Private C. Miller, Red Army soldier Private Dimitri Petrenko, and US Navy Petty Officer Locke.
It was developed by Treyarch and released in 2008.
6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Release Date: November 10, 2009
The sixth installment in the COD series is a continuation of the fourth installment storyline (COD: Modern Warfare).
The major highlight of the campaign is the hunts of Russian Ultranationalist party leader Vladimir Makarov.
The playable characters in the game are Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson, of the 141, and Private James Ramirez, of the Army Rangers, with Captain MacTavish. Captain MacTavish, however, isn’t initially playable in the campaign.
COD: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer mode is synonymous with revolutionary among games in the COD series as it does feature new modes with new features that have continued to be part of COD multiplayer modes to date and were not previously present in its predecessors.
It was released in 2009.
7. Call of Duty: Black Ops
Release Date: November 9, 2010
This 2010 first-person shooter game and the seventh installment in the COD series is a follow-up to the 2008 COD game COD: World at War.
The game story plot is set during the Cold War in the 1960s.
It follows the attempts of a CIA operative Alex Mason in recalling certain memories in order to locate a numbers station that is due to broadcast a signal to sleeper agents who are bound to use chemical weapons across the United States.
Several locations featured in the game include the Soviet Union, Cuba, Hong Kong, Laos, Vietnam, the Arctic Circle, and even Cuba. COD: Black Ops’ main playable characters are CIA operative Jason Hudson and Mason and Red Army soldier Viktor Reznov, however, only in the second mission.
The multiplayer mode of Black Ops continues on the new and improved features in modern warfare 2, adding several objective-based game modes.
It was released in 2010 and developed by Treyarch.
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Release Date: November 8, 2011
This is the only game in the COD series that was developed by two video game developers, namely: Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games.
It is a follow-up to 2009’s COD: Modern Warfare 2, and its story plot continues from the climaxing events of Modern Warfare 2 final mission.
The playable characters in the game are in a hunt for Russian terrorists and Russian Ultranationalist party leader Vladimir Makarov.
In Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer mode, it is still largely the same as Modern Warfare 2 except for a few changes, such as the incorporation of new modes types and killstreak choice.
COD: Modern Warfare 3 is the eighth installment in the COD series and was released in 2011.
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Release Date: November 13, 2012
Black Ops II is a follow-up to 2010’s COD: Black Ops. It is set in the late 1980s and 2025.
Players will control two protagonists Alex Mason and Frank Woods, in the 1980s play and control David, Mason’s son, in the 2025 gameplay.
In both time periods, players would hunts after the game’s antagonist, a cartel leader from Nicaragua, Raul Menedez, who kidnapped Woods in the 80s and ignites a second Cold War in 2025.
The story plot of Black Ops II is nonlinear and thus wounds up into multiple endings.
Other aspects of Black Ops II is the Zombies series and a competitive mode called League Play.
COD: Black Ops II was released in 2012 and developed by Treyarch.
10. Call of Duty: Ghosts
Release Date: November 5, 2013
The tenth major installment in the COD series, COD: Ghosts, was developed by Infinity Ward and released in 2013.
Its multiplayer modes follow the success of its predecessors with little difference in the game’s mechanics.
There is a new game mode called Squads in the multiplayer.
This mode which supports plays with friends, can also be played solo.
The game’s campaign mode brings a new story to the COD series and is told from the perspective of the in-game character, Logan Walker.
Players would control Logan most of the time but also will step into the role of other playable characters such as Baker as astronaut specialist, member of Icarus, Sergeant Thompson, and Logan’s father, Elias Walker.
Also, there’s an option to play as a non-human playable character, called Riley.
11. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Release Date: November 4, 2014
The eleventh installment in the COD series, COD: Advanced Warfare, is quite distinct in comparison to its predecessors.
The campaign was set in a futuristic world and features new mechanics obvious in player movements (Exo Movements).
Advanced Warfare campaign story centers around the involvement of a United States Marine Corps, Jack Mitchell, with Atlas, a private military corporation that sells its services to the highest bidder.
The game was developed by Sledgehammer and released in 2014.
12. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
Release Date: November 6, 2015
Developed by Treyarch and released in 2015, the twelfth installment in the COD series is a direct sequel to 2012’s Black Ops II.
However, as with Advanced Warfare, Black Ops III is set in a future world and features complex movement mechanics.Its story plot takes place 40 years after the events of Black Ops II in 2065 in a world threatened by climate change and developing technologies.
As with its predecessor, the story centers around a group of Black Ops soldiers.

The plot is set in outer space and thus follows the environmental policy of space, such as zero-gravity environments.
With the aid of a booster pack and a grappling hook, players can move around in these zero-gravity environments.
Exploration is also a creative feature in Infinite Warfare.
Players can visit several planets, satellites, and asteroids in the solar system.
Players will step into the role of in-game protagonist Lieutenant Nick Reyes of the Special Combat Air Recon (SCAR).
Infinite Warfare is the thirteenth installment in the COD series and was released in 2016.
14. Call of Duty: WWII
Release Date: November 3, 2017
Call of Duty: World War II returns the series back to the world war era since COD: World at War in 2008.
It is the fourteenth installment in the COD series and was developed by Sledgehammer Games.
It was released in 2017.
In WWII, the usually advanced movement feature wasn’t implemented; rather, the traditional boots on the ground were the playstyle, and also health regenerate feature was not added.
To regain health, players are required to search for health packs or rely on the support of a medic squadmate for health packs.

15. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

The fifteenth installment in the COD series, which was developed by Treyarch, is multiplayer-focused as it does not support or feature the usual single-player mode.
It is a follow-up sequel to 2015’s Black Ops III and was released in 2018. Black Ops 4 campaign modes feature solo missions that take place chronologically between events of Black Ops II and III.
Aside from that, the multiplayer mode features zombies and a new Battle Royale mode.

16. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
